Gold and silver cufflinks dull over time through contact with air; wiping them dry with a soft jewellery cloth is usually enough. Water and chemical cleaners should be kept away from enamel and mother-of-pearl faces, which are prone to cracking and colour loss. Storing the pieces so that they do not touch one another, in a compartmented box or their own pouch, prevents scratches. The original box and documents count in your favour if a sale or trade comes up later.
