How to Choose a Watch Strap

The first measurement is the lug width of the case, which must match the strap in millimetres exactly. Next come the taper from lug to buckle, the thickness of the strap, and its compatibility with a pin buckle or deployant clasp. Material shapes daily use: alligator and calf leather give a classical look but are sensitive to moisture, while rubber and canvas straps hold up better in sport use and around water. Colour and finish should be considered alongside the watch itself. A dark leather strap suits a classical dress watch, while a lighter or textured strap sits better with a sports case. On a metal case, matching the buckle to the case metal keeps the whole watch consistent; a steel buckle on a gold case is noticeable at a glance.

Strap Use and Care

Leather stiffens with sweat and water; in regular wear a strap typically lasts one to two years. Drying it at room temperature, away from direct sun and radiators, extends its life. Rubber straps need no more than regular cleaning with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Changing a strap requires the spring bar to seat correctly; a badly fitted bar can let the watch fall. If you are unsure, leave the change to us and ask our team about the right size and material.

How a Strap Change Affects the Watch

Changing the strap does not affect a watch's originality: as long as the original strap or bracelet is kept, there is no loss in pre-owned value. That is why most collectors who prefer an alternative strap for daily wear keep the maison's own strap in its box. For a sale or trade valuation, a watch is expected to come with its original strap or bracelet. Aftermarket straps are noted separately on the product page.
